WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY/CYBER MONDAY AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Black Friday began in America and the Friday after Thanksgiving Day when retailers offer massive savings, heralding the start of the Christmas shopping season. It was introduced into the UK and Europe in 2010 by Amazon and has been widely adopted by businesses since.
Cyber Monday is also a marketing term created by online retailers in America in 2005 and is the Monday after Thanksgiving Day and was intended as the online equivalent to Black Friday, although the two promotions are now merging to create a long promotional weekend.
WHY IS IT CALLED BLACK FRIDAY?
No one really knows. Some people believe that it is due to the busy traffic day in America, while others think it is the day when retailer’s books turn from red (deficit) to black (profit), due to the increase in shoppers, but there is no agreed origin of the term.
